My garage caught on fire with my car inside; is my car covered under my homeowner’s policy?
Question: My garage caught on fire with my car inside; is my car covered under my homeowner’s policy?
Answer: You have two different policies; one for your home and one for your car. If there is a fire in your home or garage and your car is destroyed, your car insurance would respond to the damages to your car and your home insurance would respond to the damage to your home and garage.
More Info: It is important to note that in order to receive coverage for your vehicle in an event like this you will likely need to carry comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance policy. This coverage is designed to protect your vehicle from things like fire, theft, vandalism, glass repair and more. This coverage may be subject to a deductible. If you do not have comprehensive insurance coverage on your car insurance your vehicle would not be covered in this scenario. Your home insurance and your garage would still be covered as long as you have a comprehensive homeowners policy, however it will not protect your vehicle.
